Kwahoshali is used by the Tongva in the treatment of various ailments.  Kwahoshali effectively treats skin problems. The Tongva make a wash from this plant to treat burns. A poultice from the roots and the flowers relieves running sores.  The same poultice also treats swollen limbs.

In Tongva tradition, the bark of the plant and the boiled flowers are helpful in treating kidney problems.  Finally, the Tongva collect kwahoshali branches and hang them in sweat houses to comfort a person suffering from profound grief.
