TAKAPE AHOTS

___________

Takape ahots is an herb or shrub that is used by the Tongva to help relieve throat and stomach ailments. To aid sore throats, the Tongva drink tea made from takape ahots fruit (pods). In order to clear the throat, they crush the seeds of the plant and make a decoction. For stomach disorders and for fevers, an infusion of the leaves is preferred. The tea made just from the pods also helps to calm general stomach dyspepsia.

The Tongva cook and eat takape ahots as well. The leaves and pods can be cooked or baked. Additionally, the Tongva dye basketry products by extracting a greenish color from the roots of takape ahots.
