Takape ahots is an herb or shrub that is used by the
Tongva to help relieve throat and stomach ailments. To
aid sore throats, the Tongva drink tea made from takape ahots fruit
(pods). In order to clear
the throat, they crush the seeds of the plant and make a decoction. For
stomach disorders and for fevers, an infusion of the leaves is preferred.
The tea made just from the pods also helps to calm general stomach
dyspepsia.
The Tongva cook and eat takape ahots as well. The
leaves and pods can be cooked or baked. Additionally, the Tongva dye basketry products by extracting a
greenish color from the roots of takape ahots.
