Oyeli has a few useful medicinal properties
for the Tongva. They make a strong decoction of oyeli roots for use as an eyewash. To relieve coughs, they also use this decoction
or an infusion made from oyeli leaves.
The Tongva also eat oyeli seeds. In
addition, they
collect raw leaves and rub them on the skin as a dye for ceremonial
activities. The flowers are worn as wreaths in Spring festivals.
